This is an industrial skyline at Trafford Park, close to the Manchester Ship Canal and where the BBC and Media City is now. I’d been shooting a sunset at The Lowry and the Imperial War Museum, and when the glowing ball slipped out of the scene, I chased after it.
It must be an unedifying sight seeing a grown man cluttering along with a tripod and cameras,in pursuit of goodness only knows what (too many people only look towards the setting sun when they see a lens pointing at it).
The horizon could contribute only ugliness to any potential image but the sunset was too good to let pass without doing something more with it.
Silhouettes have turned many a mundane scene into one of great beauty and here I used the chimney to make a lollipop with the sun: trickier than you’d think with the ground spinning beneath your feet…
I also had time to make ‘Sun in Basket’ before it gracefully left the scene.
Shot on Fuji Velvia Transparency film.
