So pack your wellies and head torches, and set out on a riverside walk as the sun begins to set.

Of course Alnwick isn’t all about the castle (and, unlike the refreshing open door policy at Bolton Abbey, there are forbidding ‘private’ land notices peppered around the place for those who haven’t got a golden ticket) and it does NOT close with the castle gates.

The town of Alnwick is full of gorgeous stonework, smart little cafes after a crust, lively pubs and some great places to stay, making it a sound base from which to explore Northumberland.
